Planning for questions.

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

 [PowerPoint]

Our product uses the convention for a thriller due to the constant feel of the unknown and not directly understanding what is fully happening. We did this through different characters wearing masks.

Uses of Conventions:

  • Created suspense.
  • There was a slow tempo in some areas.
  • Unexpected ending.
  • Close ups.
  • Low angle shot.
  • Clearly defined villain.
  • The villain seems to have more power.

Challenges Conventions:
  • It is slower than a normal thriller.
  • Doesn't have a quick feel.

Uses of Social Groups:
  • All the villains were male which in modern day society stereotypically men are conventionally played as villains compared to women.

Challenges Social Groups:
  • Use of all races. Very inclusive. We tried include all representations.
  • Our villains consisted of different races.
  • We challenged the stereotype that people of colour are normally portrayed as the villain but in our opening scene he was the hero.

How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

[Podcast]

My product engages with the audience through keeping to the convention of suspense and mystery. This should draw the audience in as they are not fully aware of what is happening and so should want to watch more to understand the story.

The way we would distribute it is through Netflix this is due to Netflix has about 222 million total subscribers this is a vast audience, and with our target audience being from ages 15+ this should benefit us. Though we know not everyone of that 222 million will watch it it is a large audience to target, and with around 164 million hours per day of watch time on Netflix this made us decide to distribute through Netflix. In comparative to another streaming site such as Amazon Prime they only have 175 million viewers a year which is less than Netflix's hence the reason we chose to go with Netflix. It is also easier for the viewer to watch as they wouldn't need to travel to a cinema to watch it they could easily sit at home and watch it on the TV or either their phone this sense of easy access made it an obvious decision to choose Netflix to distribute our work. As well as Netflix can help to promote our work and make it appealing for the audience that want to watch. it, this should also attract other viewers to have a look and watch our work.

How did your production skills develop through this project?

[Camera Interview]

My production skills I believe benefited a lot through filming and editing for this project. As it made me more aware of the camera angles, locations, sound and lighting when filming. Then after filming editing our work so that it made sense and followed the conventions of a Thriller. Though in some aspect we challenged the convention of a Thriller with the speed of our piece as it was deemed to have a slower feel compared to other Thriller opening.

I also realised how important sound is as when I was editing I couldn't always hear what the actors were saying the whole time, this was something when we got our audience feedback forms back which was mentioned. Due to this I went back to the edit and tried to increase the sound of the characters speaking and decrease the background sound. Though this helped in some clips the sound was still rather quiet. This is something I would need to think about more thoroughly next time I film something.

I also learnt to take charge as a director and tell people what they're dop9ing and where they are supposed to be as well as setting the places to film and all the props something I didn't realise that needed so much work. Which luckily resulted in the opening scene taking more time but this benefited me as I believe the more time spent setting everything up etc made my opening scene better due to it.

How did you integrate technologies – software / hardware and online – in this project?

[Reddit]

I used Final Cut Pro to edit on and a Canon D80 camera I used to film.

I had minimum experience with Final Cut Pro. Overtime I gained and more experience and understood how to use it more every time. Though this I have improved my editing skills substantially.

It made me think of what sound would be best for our product as well as cutting of the clips all things I now think about a lot more.

Though I learnt a lot myself and Oscar rotated roles of editing to really benefit both of us with editing.

I used Google Forms as a key insight to peoples opinions in both genres and their overall opinion on our opening scene, this all consisted of qualitative data.

With use of the preliminary task I could practise editing before doing my opening scene, this helped as I could try different things and see how they go, which helped a lot.
